How to build your own drinks cabinet

DIY projects are the in thing for creative people. It is a good avenue for people to exercise their creative muscles and come up with unique things without having to spend an arm and a leg. To make your own drinks cabinet, you need to choose the kind of style that appeals to you. Some options that one can consider include:

1. Hideaway cabinet

To do this, all you need is a storage box that is large enough to fit your assortment of drinks. Screw the box onto a wall with the base attached to the wall. The top part should be attached by a hinge and should have a latch to close it upwards. For this, you do not need to put a lot of work into it as the storage box should already have compartments. Use a different compartment for your drinks of choice. Plus, no one would think to look for drinks in there!

2. Old TV re-make

Sometimes you do not have to build something from scratch. Using an old television set as a cabinet is a good idea. The vintage look has a display through the old screen and you can spruce it up to pile your drinks in a classy, old-school-style look. All you need to do is get the television gutted, the wires removed, clean the box and fit some pretty sweet shelves and voila! You have a classy drinks cabinet.

3. Repurposing an old library card catalog

For this, all you need to do is find an old library card catalog. The next step is to sand it down and give it your look of choice. You may want to change the varnish into something playful or even retain it and achieve a rustic look. The cabinets can be used to file away your drinks and it is quite unique! You can further make labels for your drawers thus eliminating the Dewey decimal system for finding your drink of choice.

Basic drinks to have in any DIY bar

Everyone has their drink of choice, the kind that will not lack in their home bar. However, there are the general characteristics of any home drinks cabinet that should act as a guideline for anyone looking to have their own drinks bar. These include, but are not limited to:

  • Light Rum
  • Dark rum
  • Gin, although not everyone likes gin. This should be paired up with tonic so that is another drink
  • Rye Whiskey
  • Silver and gold tequila
  • Sweet and dry Vermouth
  • Absinthe
  • Contrieu
  • Bourbon
  • Cognac
  • Cassis

You can make your own home bar once you decide what you would like to achieve. Would you like rustic, classy or modern? This not only determines the material to use for the cabinet, it also influences the color and the composition of the cabinet. The point of making the cabinet yourself is to personalize it.
